Abstract

Gout, an inflammatory arthropathy associated with substantial global health and economic burdens, primarily results from hyperuricemia—an abnormal elevation of serum uric acid concentration. The limitations of conventional urate-lowering agents in terms of efficacy, safety, and accessibility underscore the need for alternative therapeutic strategies. This study evaluated the antihyperuricemic potential of the ethanolic leaf extract of Ficus nota (Tibig) using a potassium oxonate–induced hyperuricemic rat model. Phytochemical analysis confirmed the presence of bioactive constituents within the extract. Statistical evaluation using one-way ANOVA demonstrated a significant reduction in serum uric acid levels among the treatment groups, with F. nota extract exhibiting effects comparable to those of allopurinol. The observed antihyperuricemic activity may be attributed to xanthine oxidase inhibition and/or enhanced uric acid excretion. These findings suggest that F. nota possesses significant potential as a locally sourced, cost-effective phytotherapeutic candidate for hyperuricemia management. Further studies are warranted to elucidate its underlying mechanisms and long-term safety profile.
