The Impact of Microinteractions on User Engagement in Mobile Applications: A Cognitive and Affective Analysis

Abstract
Microinteractions have become a fundamental component of mobile application design, shaping how users engage with digital systems through small, task-specific interaction moments. Despite their widespread use in contemporary interface design, limited empirical research has examined their direct influence on user engagement, particularly from both cognitive and affective perspectives. This study investigates the impact of microinteractions on user engagement in mobile applications by examining how they influence cognitive load, emotional response, and overall interaction experience. The study is grounded in interaction design and cognitive psychology frameworks, drawing on the view that microinteractions consist of triggers, rules, feedback, and loops that structure user-system communication. From a cognitive perspective, microinteractions are analysed in terms of their ability to reduce uncertainty, improve task efficiency, and minimise cognitive load during interaction. From an affective perspective, the study explores how feedback mechanisms such as animations, vibrations, and visual transitions generate emotional responses that contribute to satisfaction, perceived responsiveness, and engagement. Methodologically, the study adopts a mixed approach combining controlled experimental tasks with in-situ experience sampling to capture both performance-based outcomes and real-time user emotional responses. This design addresses a key gap in existing literature, where most studies rely on case-based evidence or retrospective self-reporting rather than real-time behavioural and emotional data. Findings from the analysis suggest that microinteractions significantly influence user engagement by enhancing both cognitive efficiency and affective satisfaction. However, their impact is non-linear, as excessive or poorly designed microinteractions may increase cognitive load and reduce usability. The study concludes that optimal engagement is achieved through a balanced application of microinteractions that support clarity, emotional reinforcement, and contextual responsiveness within mobile applications.
