Abstract
Humanitarian crisis responses remain crucial for supporting communities affected by natural disasters, armed conflicts, and other crises. However, the absence of appropriate technology and the continuous apparent lack of accurate and up-to-date information, especially in developing countries, often hinder the effectiveness of these operations. Data and technology can play a vital role in addressing this issue by providing real-time information and enabling more efficient decision-making. Humanitarian crises, such as natural disasters, armed conflicts, and forced displacement, significantly impact people's lives worldwide, especially in Nigeria. Using data and emerging technologies can potentially enhance the effectiveness of humanitarian response efforts in the continent. As the availability and accessibility of data increase and considerable advances in technology become prominent, new opportunities for humanitarian organisations will continue to emerge for improvement in response efforts. Emerging technologies have the potential to improve humanitarian operations in Nigeria by facilitating communication, coordination, and data collection and analysis, reducing congestion in the supply chain, decreasing lead times, increasing transparency and accountability of material and financial resources, and facilitating innovation and sustainable development. Despite the opportunities for improvement, several challenges associated with data and technology require attention. This research explores how humanitarian actors leverage data and emerging technologies to improve the response to humanitarian crises, focusing on Nigeria.
