Abstract
Background: Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) is essential for maintaining professional competence, enhancing clinical knowledge, and improving patient outcomes. Senior Nurse Managers (SNMs) play a crucial role in fostering professional development and strengthening educational initiatives within healthcare institutions. The present study aims to assess the perception and participation of Senior Nurse Managers regarding Continuing Nursing Education activities and to identify factors that promote or hinder their participation.
Methods: A quantitative, non-experimental descriptive survey design was employed. The study was conducted among 55 Senior Nurse Managers using total enumeration sampling. Data were collected using a structured self-administered questionnaire comprising sections on demographic characteristics, perception and participation in Continuing Nursing Education (CNE) activities, and practices related to CNE programs. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics (frequency and percentage) and inferential statistics using the Chi-square test to determine associations between selected variables.
Results: Most participants were aged 56–60 years (41.81%), and the majority held a General Nursing and Midwifery qualification (92.72%). Nearly all respondents expressed interest in Continuing Nursing Education (94.54%), and 92.73% had participated in at least one CNE activity. Workshops were the most commonly attended programs (85.45%). Key motivating factors included updating advanced knowledge (81.81%), employer financial support (80%), and personal interest (78.18%). Major barriers to participation were work schedule constraints (56.36%), family responsibilities (41.81%), and staff shortages (32.72%). Also, demonstrated a significant association between age and participation as well as designation and participation while educational qualification showed no significant association.
Conclusion: Senior Nurse Managers demonstrate positive perceptions toward continuing nursing education and recognize its importance in professional growth and quality patient care. However, participation is influenced by both organizational and personal barriers.
