Abstract
Background: Blood donation and transfusion are one of the main components of healthcare globally, yet the prevalence of voluntary, non-remunerated blood donation in Nigeria remains critically low, where only 10% to 27% of the annual blood requirement is met through voluntary non-remunerated donation.
Objective: To debunk the common myths and misconceptions about voluntary blood donation, to promote awareness, provide understanding of voluntary blood donation, identify the barriers and propose strategies to encourage informed participation.
Method: A thorough review of existing literatures was conducted examining long time believed traditions, myths and misconceptions surrounding ages, pains, infection transmission, gender limitations, religion and spiritual beliefs.
Keywords: Voluntary blood donation, Myths, Misconceptions
