Abstract

Traditional urban fabric (TUF) embodies the cultural, spatial, and social characteristics of historic cities, playing a fundamental role in preserving urban identity, continuity, and sustainable development. Despite growing scholarly interest, research on the integration of TUF within contemporary urban development remains fragmented, with limited synthesis of prevailing trends and approaches. This study synthesises peer-reviewed literature published between 2019 and 2024 to examine emerging research patterns, planning strategies, and thematic developments concerning the integration of TUF into contemporary urban planning and development. A thematic review of 25 journal articles was undertaken using qualitative thematic analysis to identify recurring patterns across diverse geographical contexts. The findings reveal four interrelated themes: (1) heritage management, governance, and policy; (2) urban morphology, spatial structure, and revitalisation; (3) community participation, identity, and social inclusion; and (4) resilience, sustainability, and environmental integration. Collectively, these themes demonstrate that effective TUF integration extends beyond heritage conservation by incorporating governance, community engagement, spatial planning, and environmental sustainability into a holistic planning approach. This review proposes a structured thematic framework that strengthens the conceptual understanding of TUF integration while providing practical insights for policymakers, urban planners, and heritage practitioners. Future research should prioritise comparative cross-regional studies, integrate digital and participatory planning tools, and examine the socio-economic outcomes of heritage-led urban development to support culturally responsive and sustainable cities.
