Influences of The Folk Costume of The Republic of Moldova in Contemporary Fashion

Abstract

The folk costume of the Republic of Moldova constitutes an important component of the country's cultural heritage and continues to play a significant role in contemporary fashion design through the creative reinterpretation of its structural, ornamental, and symbolic characteristics. This study examines the influence of Moldovan folk costume on contemporary fashion and explores its contribution to cultural preservation, creative innovation, and the international development of Moldovan fashion. A qualitative research methodology was employed, combining documentary research, comparative analysis, iconographic analysis, and multiple case studies involving Moldovan and international fashion designers. The findings demonstrate that contemporary reinterpretations extend beyond the literal reproduction of traditional garments, transforming traditional construction principles, embroidery techniques, ornamental systems, natural materials, and symbolic meanings into new aesthetic languages adapted to current social, cultural, and technological contexts. The study further identifies different strategies of heritage reinterpretation, ranging from conservative approaches closely connected to traditional forms to experimental intercultural interpretations. While the influence of Moldovan fashion remains strongest within Eastern Europe, the richness of its cultural heritage provides substantial potential for broader international recognition. The study concludes that the creative reinterpretation of folk costume represents an important mechanism for preserving cultural identity while simultaneously fostering innovation, strengthening the international visibility of Moldovan fashion, and contributing to contemporary discussions on fashion, heritage, and cultural sustainability.
