Artificial Intelligence and Economic Growth: Exploring The Pathways of Technological Advancement

Abstract

Artificial Intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the most transformative technologies driving digital transformation and economic development. As governments and organizations increasingly integrate AI into their operations, its potential to enhance productivity, foster innovation, transform labour markets, and strengthen business competitiveness has attracted growing attention from researchers and policymakers. Although the literature on AI and economic growth has expanded considerably, the mechanisms through which AI contributes to economic development remain fragmented and require a more comprehensive conceptual understanding. Therefore, this paper explores the relationship between Artificial Intelligence and economic growth through the pathways of technological advancement using a conceptual research approach. By synthesising existing theoretical and empirical literature, the study develops an integrated conceptual framework illustrating how AI contributes to economic growth through four interconnected pathways: productivity enhancement, innovation development, labour market transformation, and business competitiveness. The framework further emphasises the importance of digital infrastructure, human capital, and the policy environment in supporting the successful adoption of AI. While AI offers substantial opportunities for economic transformation, its implementation also presents challenges, including workforce adaptation, ethical considerations, and digital inequality, which should be addressed to ensure sustainable and inclusive economic development. The proposed framework provides a theoretical foundation for future conceptual and empirical studies while offering practical insights for policymakers, researchers, and business leaders seeking to leverage AI for sustainable economic growth in the digital economy.
