Anganwadi Women Workers of India: The Unsung Architects of India's Human Development – The Need to Recognise the Contribution of Grassroots Women in Early Childhood Care, Nutrition and Community Development

Abstract

The Anganwadi system, established under the Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) Scheme in 1975, is one of India's most significant social welfare interventions. At the heart of this programme are the Anganwadi Workers (AWWs), women drawn from local communities who function simultaneously as educators, nutrition facilitators, health workers, counsellors, and agents of social transformation. Their contribution extends beyond child welfare to encompass maternal health, gender empowerment, community participation, and national human capital formation. Despite their indispensable role, Anganwadi Workers continue to face inadequate remuneration, expanding workloads, and limited professional recognition. This article critically examines their contribution from historical, educational, public health, and developmental perspectives while highlighting the challenges confronting the Anganwadi system. It argues that strengthening and recognising Anganwadi Workers is essential for achieving India's developmental aspirations and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
