Abstract

This article examines the socioeconomic implications of the Bank of Ghana's aggressive liquidity management operations, with particular reference to the June 3, 2026, 14-day bill auction that withdrew GHS 11.28 billion from the financial system at a weighted average interest rate of 10.93 percent. Drawing upon macroeconomic data from the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, Ghana Statistical Service, and Bank of Ghana, the study analyses the transmission mechanisms through which monetary tightening affects the standard of living of Ghanaians, economic growth trajectories, and employment dynamics. The article employs a mixed-methods analytical framework, combining trend analysis with descriptive statistics, to evaluate the trade-offs between inflation control and inclusive development. The findings indicate that while the Bank of Ghana's liquidity mop-up operations have contributed to the remarkable decline in headline inflation from 40.3 percent in 2023 to 5.8 percent in 2025, the sustained period of high real interest rates has significantly constrained private capital formation, compressed formal sector employment, and deepened poverty incidence. The study argues that the current monetary policy stance, though successful in price stabilization, requires complementary fiscal and structural reforms to translate macroeconomic stability into tangible improvements in living standards. The article concludes with policy recommendations centred on strategic capital investment as the catalyst for sustainable growth and employment generation.
